An Open Letter to Spa Professionals and Spa Goers

This year, the Spa Industry Association of Canada (SIAC) is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The association started as the result of a small group of destination spas that saw a need for a professional association to promote the industry within Canada and globally. And, over the years, our mandate has grown to include education and knowledge sharing, standards and best practices, and networking through conferences and events.
We participate in a powerful global network. We identify foremost spa practices, and promote the highest of industry standards in order to attract Canada’s best spas, product, service, and educational organizations to our association.

I’m pleased to let you know that we are on the cusp of some exciting changes that the Board believes will reinvigorate our community of professionals and further enhance the spa experience for consumers.

International Recognition
The Relais & Chateaux association in France, known for delivering exceptional quality and memorable experiences to its customers, recently requested permission to highlight SIAC members who have been recognized as Leading Spas on a digital platform it is preparing to launch in 64 countries.

Leadership and Marketing
The Board of Directors is in the process of recruiting an Executive Director for the association, along with a marketing and communications partner firm to ensure that we are fulfilling our mission and delivering value to all of our members.

Planning and Programming
The first priority for the Executive Director will be to work with the Board and our new marketing and communications partner to develop a strategic plan for the association. To do this, we will be relying on the insight and information you provided in the member survey conducted earlier this year. Thank you so much to everyone who participated. Your input will be instrumental in our planning and decision making.

Here are some of the highlights of the results:

  • Of the 154 respondents, 50% were SIAC members
  • The greatest number of responses were received from day spas, resorts/hotels, distributors and medical spas

The top three reasons respondents join SIAC or other spa association are:
  1. Networking
  2. Knowledge Resources
  3. Opportunities to Advertise

The top five areas that present business challenges for respondents are:
  1. Finding Qualified Staff
  2. Educating and Training Staff
  3. Marketing and Promotions
  4. Human Resources
  5. Retail Merchandising

  • 84% of respondents indicated that it would be beneficial to affiliate SIAC with another association
  • 79% felt that being part of a professional association positively affects their business
  • 90% indicated interest in attending an international association event
  • Respondents also indicated that networking, seminars and industry exposure were very important

This is not the only time we’ll be reaching out. We are committed to keeping you updated and engaging you in the discussion. And, to get things started, we’re planning a national event next year to reconnect and celebrate this 20-year milestone with all of you.

In the meantime, I want to thank you all for your ongoing passion and commitment to our industry. We are proud to represent such a dynamic and vital contributor to the Canadian economy, and we are excited about celebrating a milestone with you next year. Please stay tuned for more information.

Sincerely,
Elena Zinchenko
